Every place has a story.
This one begins long before there were cabins, glamping tents, or even the idea of Basecamp.
For years, Jeremy and I found ourselves returning to the Hill Country whenever we could. We were living in Dallas and building careers, but every visit reminded us that life felt different here. Slower. Simpler. More connected.
One evening after dinner at Hilltop Café in Fredericksburg, I looked at Jeremy and said, “This feels like home.”
A few months later, we packed up and moved to Kerr County.
At the time, we weren’t looking to build a resort. We simply wanted to build a life here.
Then, in 2020, we renovated a little bungalow in Kerrville as our first vacation rental. What surprised us wasn’t how much we enjoyed hosting, it was the people we met. Families celebrating milestones, lifelong friends reconnecting, couples escaping the busyness of everyday life, and sometimes people simply looking for a peaceful place to heal after a difficult season.
It made us realize that where people stay often becomes part of their story.
Then something unexpected happened.
The property that is now Basecamp quietly came on the market. For years, I had driven past it thinking, Who are the lucky people who get to own this place? I never imagined we’d someday become its caretakers.
We started with the Lodge, making thoughtful updates while preserving everything that made it feel warm and welcoming. Then came Rocking F Rambler, Carmel Cottage and Casita Juanita. Only after that did we begin dreaming about the tents that have become such a special part of Basecamp today.
Each cabin.
Each tent.
Each name.
Each one has a story.
